Applications for admission to the 2nd Cycle/Master and 3rd Cycle/PhD courses of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro will take place on the 9th february until 22nd march 2024.
Applications are made exclusively online and are intended for all those interested in joining a UTAD Masters and/or PhD course for attendance in the academic year 2024/2025, regardless of the nationality of candidates (including international students).
Can apply for a 2nd cycle course (master’s degree):
a) Holders of a bachelor degree or legal equivalent;
b) Holders of a foreign higher degree, conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the Bologna Process principles by a State adhering to the Process;
c) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree recognized by the Scientific or Technical-Scientific Council of the organic unit of education as satisfying the objectives of the bachelor degree unit;
d) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting ability to carry out the study cycle by the Scientific or Technical-Scientific Council of the organic unit of education;
e) In the 1st phase, finalists of the degrees with well-founded expectations of obtaining the Bachelor’s degree can apply, conditionally, until the last day of enrollment established for these candidates in the 1st phase (15/07/2024). In the 2nd phase, finalists of the degrees with well-founded expectations of obtaining the Bachelor’s degree can apply, conditionally, until the last day of enrollment established for this phase (09/09/2024).
Can apply for a 3rd cycle course (PhD):
a) Holders of the master degree or legal equivalent;
b) Holders of a bachelor degree, holders of a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum that is recognized as attesting ability to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific or Technical-Scientific Council of the educational unit;
c) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the ability to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the educational unit;
d) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as satisfying the objectives of the degree of licenciado by the Scientific or Technical-Scientific Council of the organic unit of education;
e) In the 1st phase, finalists of the Masters with well-founded expectations of obtaining the Master’s degree can apply, conditionally, until the last day of registration established for these candidates in the 1st phase (15/07/2024). In the 2nd phase, the finalists of the Masters with well-founded expectations of obtaining the Master’s degree can apply, conditionally, until the last day of enrollment established for this phase (09/09/2024).
Admission to certain courses may demand the satisfaction of specific requirements. Therefore, information on each course can be find out at the UTAD website at https://www.utad.pt/estudar/en/
The application fee is 20.00 euros (no refund, including in situations of invalidation of the application or non-placement).
The submission of applications to several courses implies the payment of an amount equal to n x 20.00 € where n is the number of courses to which you are applying.
The claim of the ranking process fee is 30.00 euros (a refundable amount only if the candidate becomes placed).
Payment of the application fee:
It is processed through the means/modalities to be made available in the online application module, after submission of the application.
Notice:
1. Applications must be paid by the end of the application period, in relation to the phase to which they relate.
2. Applications not paid by the deadline will be rejected outright.
3. The application fee is non-refundable.
The application is submitted exclusively on the online platform available on the Academic Services website and must be accompanied by the following documents (the upload of documents is mandatory), according to the candidate’s situation:
3.1. Candidates who compete as GRADUATES
a) Identification document (mandatory):
i. In the case of applicants of Portuguese nationality: Identity Card or Citizen Card;
ii. In the case of applicants of nationality from another country of the European Union: National identification document or passport;
iii. In the case of candidates of non-European Union nationality: Passport or residence permit in Portugal.
b) Taxpayer identification card;
c) Certificate of completion of the degree or diploma, indicating the final average (mandatory);
d) Discriminating certificate of the curricular units completed, respective grades and ECTS;
e) In the case of candidates with foreign qualifications, in addition to the document indicated in paragraph c), the candidate must submit an official statement, issued by the Higher Education Institution where he completed the academic degree, which contains the final classification of that academic degree, as well as as the respective scale used. If this statement is not presented, the minimum approval rating on the Portuguese scale (10 points) will be considered. The same applies to any other qualification certificates or diplomas submitted in the application;
f) Candidates holding an integrated master’s degree must present the certificate of completion of the degree (1st cycle of studies). In cases where only the certificate of completion of the integrated master’s degree is presented and the final classification of the degree proves to be essential for the ranking of candidates, the minimum classification of approval in the Portuguese scale (10 out of 20) in the degree may be assigned;
g) Curriculum Vitae (academic, scientific and professional);
h) Other elements that the candidate deems useful for assessing the application;
i) Other elements that the Course Committee may request.
3.2. Candidates running as “FINALISTS” in 2023/2024
a) Identification document (mandatory):
i. In the case of applicants of Portuguese nationality: Identity Card or Citizen Card;
ii. In the case of applicants of nationality from another country of the European Union: National identification document or passport;
iii. In the case of candidates of non-European Union nationality: Passport or residence permit in Portugal.
b) Taxpayer identification card;
c) Updated certificate, issued by the Academic Services of the Higher Education Institution you are attending, indicating the course and academic year you are enrolled in 2023/2024 (mandatory);
d) Updated statement or certificate, issued by the Academic Services of the Higher Education Institution you are attending, stating the course you are enrolled in in 2023/2024 and the respective current average. In the case of a foreign qualification, this statement must also indicate the classification scale used (example: from 0 to 100; from 0 to 10, etc.);
Students from national Higher Education establishments may, alternatively, present a Certificate detailing the curricular units completed, respective classifications and ECTS;
If none of the documents that comply with this paragraph are presented, the minimum classification of the national scale (10 points) will be considered.
e) Curriculum Vitae (academic, scientific and professional);
f) Other elements that the candidate considers to be useful for assessing the application;
g) Other elements that the Course Committee may request.
Notice:
1. Alternatively, and only for candidates with academic qualifications obtained at UTAD, the documents indicated in point d) of point 3.1 (Graduates), and in points c) and d) of point 3.2 (Finalists), may be replaced by a document regarding the student’s situation, duly identified and with the date of its creation, uploading it in the application.
2. If a digital certificate is presented for online verification/validation, the candidate must submit the necessary data so that the Services can carry out this verification/validation.
3. Certificates indicating specific purposes will not be accepted (for example: for the purposes of ADSE, IRS, scholarships, etc.).
4. Supplements to the Diploma, by itself, that are not accompanied by the respective certificate of completion or diploma will not be accepted.
5. Documents that are not written in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish must be accompanied by an official translation into Portuguese or English.
6. Failure to present the documents in the terms indicated, or mandatory data, or the presentation of illegible documents, which prevent the correct assessment and application of the selection and ranking procedures, or their presentation after the deadline, implies the rejection candidacy threshold.
7. If you intend to apply for more than one course, you must observe the same procedure for each course separately, as well as pay the respective application fee for each course you apply for.
8. Students who were enrolled in the 1st cycle, regardless of having attended 2nd cycle curricular units, will have to apply for the 2nd cycle course if they maintain interest in joining the course.
9. The application process is the candidate’s responsibility.
4. Additional Rules
4.1. Rules for “FINALISTS” candidates in 2023/2024
Admitted candidates will only be allowed to register/enrol, after sending it to sautad@utad.pt, until 12:00 (local time of reception) of the last day foreseen for the “Registration of Enrollments” of the respective phase in which they were admitted, scanning the original of the graduation certificate or the original of the diploma. In the case of finalist candidates for foreign qualifications, the document must be duly legalized under the terms of point 4.2.
4.2. Rules for candidates who are admitted to enrollment/inscription, holders of foreign documents
a) Enrollment/registration will only be allowed after sending it to sautad@utad.pt, until 12:00 pm (local reception time) on the last day foreseen for “Enrollment Enrollment” of the respective phase in which it was admitted, of digitalization of the original documents legalized in the following terms:
i. Originals of all foreign diplomas/certificates with which they applied, duly legalized by the Portuguese consular agent in the country of origin of the diploma/certificate or legalized by the Hague Apostille;
ii. Diplomas/certificates that are not written in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish must be translated into Portuguese or English, and the translation must be legalized by the Portuguese consular agent in the country of origin of the diploma/certificate or legalized by the Hague Apostille, this situation being cumulative with the previous one.
b) The Academic Services may require the presentation of the original certificates, and their translation, authenticated under the terms of paragraph a).
c) Enrollment that has not been preceded by the sending of documents/certificates under the terms of subparagraph a), and/or failure to present the originals within the period indicated by the Academic Services, certified under the terms of subparagraph b), implies the cancellation enrollment, not exempting, however, from the payment of fees due up to the date of cancellation.
4.3. Rules for applicants to 2nd Cycles that confer professional qualification for the performance of teaching activities
In addition to the conditions expressed in points 4.1 and 4.2, it is a general condition for admission (so that you can enroll) in each of the specialties of any cycle of studies leading to obtaining a master’s degree that confers professional qualification for teaching in pre-school education. -School and in Basic and Secondary Education:
a) Ownership of the credits required for each field of qualification (in the application act, they must attach documentary proof of successfully completing the specialty credits required for the master’s degree they intend to pursue, detailing the respective classifications and credits – ECTS);
b) Oral and written command of the Portuguese language (successfully taking the Portuguese language test).
c) The condition expressed in sub-paragraph b) does not exclude access to the series, however, registration is subject to the presentation of the certificate proving approval in the Portuguese language test by 12:00 on the last day of the deadline defined for the registration of candidates finalists (15/07/2024).
You are advised to read Decree-Law No. 79/2014, of May 14, in its updated wording, and Regulation No. 817/2018, of December 6, which can be consulted at the link.
Candidates are admitted to the course under the proposal of the Course Committee, after favorable deliberation by the Scientific/Technical-Scientific Council of the School, the process being approved by the President of the School, in accordance with the following general criteria:
a) Adequacy and classification of the access authorization;
b) Academic, scientific and professional curriculum;
c) Applicants may be required to submit a letter of motivation and at least one letter of recommendation. a letter of recommendation;
d) Candidates may undergo selection tests by interview.
The sub-criteria and the respective weightings are the responsibility of each of the Course Commissions and will appear in the minutes approved by the body.
When analyzing applications, the Course Committees may, if they wish, ask candidates to prove the elements mentioned in the processes or to deliver other documents.
In the courses listed in the table (point 11), the admission of foreign applicants with non-EU nationality (not belonging to the European Union) is limited to a specific number of places, which corresponds to a maximum of the number indicated in the 2nd column of the 1st Phase.
In order for the application to be validated and to be analyzed by the Course Committee, the candidate must pay the application fee (€20.00 for each course applied for) and correctly submit all the requested documents.
After the admission selections, the results are posted at the Academic Services webpage.
“Finalists” candidates admitted, or in the position of substitutes who may be placed, in the 1st phase, who do not enroll within the deadline established for this purpose (15/07/2024), according to the calendar published and transcribed below, namely by If they do not have a degree completion certificate, their application will be automatically transferred to the 2nd phase, without the need to pay a new application fee, unless they state otherwise, using the indication for this purpose on the application platform .
“Graduated” candidates admitted, or in the position of substitutes who may be placed, in the 1st phase, who do not enroll within the deadline established for this purpose (24/05/2024), according to the calendar published and transcribed below, will have to make, if they wish, a new application in the 2nd phase, paying the respective application fee.
“Graduated” and/or “Finalists” candidates admitted in the 1st phase to a 2nd Cycle that confers professional qualification for the performance of the teaching activity who do not present the document/certificate of approval in the Portuguese language test, under the terms expressed in paragraph c) of point 4.3, will have their application automatically transferred to the 2nd phase, without the requirement to pay a new application fee, unless they manifest otherwise, using the existing indication for this purpose on the application platform.
Candidates with an “Not Admited” application, if they wish, must re-apply in the 2nd phase and pay the relevant application fee.
The tuition fees to be applied in the academic year 2024/2025 are those set by the UTAD’s General Council.
The fee is payable at the time of enrollment/registration, with the following conditions applying depending on the origin of the applicants:
a) For national candidates, nationals of European Union countries and foreigners belonging to the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), it can be paid according to one of the following modalities:
i. Payment in a single installment upon enrollment/registration;
ii. Payment in 10 (ten) installments of equal value, the first upon registration/registration and the remaining between October and June;
b) For foreign candidates from countries not belonging to the European Union or the CPLP, payment in a single installment corresponding to the total amount of the annual fee is mandatory.
Upon registration, and within the period granted, it is mandatory to pay the registration fee, school insurance and the amount of the tuition fee corresponding to the 1st instalment, or in its entirety, depending on your option and/or your condition. of nationality, as indicated in paragraphs a) and b). Only if these conditions are met, effective students with active registration can be considered, for the due purposes.
The school calendar is defined for the academic year 2024/2025, in accordance with the calendar approved by order of the Rector and published on the Academic Services website.

UTAD reserves the right not to open vacancies for the 2nd phase of applications, in case, after completing the 1st phase of applications, there are less than 10 students enrolled in the master’s courses or in their branches/specializations.
UTAD reserves the right not to open a course for new students, in case, after completing the 3rd phase of applications, there are less than 15 students enrolled in the master’s courses or in their branches/specializations.
In case a course does not open, due to not reaching the minimum number of enrolled students, candidates may be relocated to another course, at their request, and must submit an application for the desired course, being exempt from the application fee, and additional vacancies may be created, if necessary, by rectoral order.
All vacancies left over from the 2nd phase will carry over to the 3rd phase, with the vacancies to be considered in this phase dependent on the results of enrollment in the 1st phase and existing applications, being defined according to the maximum number of admissions allowed for each course.
