Resumo:
Sulforaphane (SFN) is an isothiocyanate found in Brassica vegetables. The use of SFN for obesity treatment has been investigated with promising results. Brassicas production in the European Union and Portugal represents large amounts of byproducts with negative economic and environmental impacts. The exploitation of these byproducts for the extraction of SFN or used as a whole extract could be a strategy to follow with interest to stakeholders such as Nutrigreen, a partner in this project. This project aims to fight obesity while adding value to Brassica byproducts. A whole extract will be obtained from Brassica byproducts and its efficacy will be evaluated first in cell lines and later in an animal model of obesity. The efficacy of SFN commercially available will also be evaluated. The results will determine the way to go: whole extract or SFN extraction from Brassica byproducts to be used in the form of dietary supplements which may be employed for prevention or treatment of obesity.
