Resumo:
Commercial available plastic photochromic lenses contain uncoloured naphthopyrans that develop, reversibly, intense grey or brown shades under direct sunlight. However, although their coloration is quite fast (30 s), the discoloration is very slow, taking more than 8 min to return completely to the uncoloured state, thus creating a problem of adaptation to the surrounding dynamic environment. This slow color fading is due to the formation of two coloured species one of which exhibits a slow fading and responsible for the persistence of residual coloration in the dark. We propose to synthesize a new class of fused-naphthopyrans that can only generate the fast fading coloured photoisomer and thus will exhibit a faster colour fading in the dark. This project joins na academic team with two companies specialized in the production of ophthalmic lenses and foresees the application of these smart molecules to their lenses.
