General Objectives
The Degree in Zootechnical Engineering is a 1st cycle course (180 ECTS) that takes place over 6 academic semesters. The course is carried out in a work environment essentially focused on scientific research, and future graduates will have the necessary preparation to express their skills and competencies at different levels:

- Intellectual level
To structure their self-learning, to apply scientific methodologies and to describe, formulate and correctly communicate to several types of interlocutors (producers, scientists, public opinion, etc.) relatively complex questions about productive results.

- Professional and academic level
To be able to question the methodologies used and demonstrate the ability to acquire fundamental scientific knowledge in their area of training.

- Practical activity level
To reveal a capacity for analysis and intervention on practical issues (animal husbandry, feeding, genetic improvement, breeding, technical and economic management of farms, production of animal feed, safety and quality control, environmental impact, etc.) in a professional context.

This 1st cycle therefore has a solid element of basic training in animal production engineering sciences, but also training already focused on production biotechnology, livestock facilities and equipment, animal products processing, livestock farm management and its place in economic activity.
Graduates will be able to enter the job market in the different areas that this activity deals with or to continue studies in the 2nd cycle.

Career Opportunities
- Animal Production Companies:
1) plan, manage and evaluate the productive performance of the animals,
2) plan, manage and evaluate in an integrated way the reproductive, feeding, health and management programmes,
3) plan and manage the workforce of the farms,
4) use computer support programs and provide technical advice on farm management,
5) provide technical advice in the upstream sectors (official services, producer associations) and downstream (slaughtering units, processing industry and distribution and marketing companies) of production.
- Zoos:
1) prepare and carry out actions aimed at the welfare of the animals in the zoo collection,
2) participate in the choice of specimens to enter the zoo, in order to safeguard their welfare and/or that of the other animals,
3) participate in the management of surplus animals,
4) provide technical guidance to animal keepers, and
5) prepare feeding programmes for the various species of wild animals that make up the collection of zoos.
- Nutrition and Animal Feed:
1) formulate compound feed and diets based on knowledge of nutritional needs,
2) management activities in compound feed factories (raw materials, stocks, formulation, manufacturing, storage and shipping) and
3) provide technical advice to producers to verify the performance of the animals.
- Animal Breeding:
1) design and develop advanced animal breeding methodologies and evaluate their results,
2) management of herd records and conservation of genetic resources.
- Animal Reproduction:
1) design and implement programmes of reproductive control in farms, with computer support,
2) design and implement programmes for the collection, processing, storage and use of semen,
3) design programmes for the diagnosis and follow-up of pregnancy in animal farms; and
4) design and develop advanced assisted reproduction programmes involving new technologies in this area (artificial insemination, embryo transfer, sexing and cloning).
Graduate Profile
- Graduates will have capacities for project design, technical direction, management and evaluation of companies in the area ofanimal production from both wealth-generating and environmentally-friendly perspectives;
- Professional training, consultancy and scientific research skills in the various aspects of animal production;
- An integrated approach to the production, processing and quality control of products of animal origin;
- Knowledge of the biology and techniques of wildlife management that allow them to guarantee the well-being of these in captivity;
- The knowledge to be able to effectively evaluate the state of the facilities and infrastructures in which the animals are housed, proposing solutions for their repair/adaptation/improvement;
- Conditions to pursue 2nd and 3rd cycle studies (Masters and PhD, respectively).
