General Objectives
The main objective of this degree course is to prepare tourism technicians with a broad, holistic and complex view of the tourism system, allowing them to better manage, design and plan products, experiences, policies, companies, organizations, territories and tourist destinations. Tourism graduates from UTAD acquire the following competencies:
a) Instrumental: capacity for analysis, communication (domain of languages), organization, planning, management, decision making;
b) Personal: Teamwork, interdisciplinarity; interpersonal relationships; multiculturality; cosmopolitanism; critical thinking; ethic; openness of mind; empathy;
c) Systemic: Quality; environmental sensitivity; autonomous learning; adaptation to new situations, creativity; led; knowledge of other cultures; initiative and entrepreneurship; creativity; responsible tourism.

Our tourism students achieve a multidisciplinary training based on three fundamental pillars for this training-work area: professionalism, hospitality and cosmopolitanism. This is the philosophy of the UTAD tourism course.
In addition, the mission of this course is to teach students the art of communicating, attracting, receiving, hosting and serving visitors, which is a transversal competence of tourism professionals. Another transversal competence of this course is the knowledge of the cultures, languages and places of origin of the tourists, in order to build a more appropriate and less ethnocentric intercultural relationship.

The profile of the tourism bachelor by UTAD is that of a multi-purpose tourism superior technician who is qualified to work in different professional areas, among which we highlight:

1. Planning and public management of destinations: management of cultural and natural heritage, management of leisure facilities; event management;
2. Training, research and consultancy in the field of tourism;
3. Tourism intermediation. Ex: agencies and tour operators, tour guides, guides interpreters of the patrimony ...
4. Transportation and logistics of tourism;
5. Design of products, experiences, routes and tourist activities;
6. Accommodation, reception, hospitality and hospitality of visitors;
7. Restoration and management of food hospitality;
8. Tourist animation activities;
Graduate Profile
UTAD's tourism degree was born in 1997 and today operates in the small and dynamic city of Vila Real, the capital and port of the region of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (Northern Portugal). The undergraduate degree in tourism at UTAD is the only public (non-polytechnic) university education in Northern Portugal. In 2015, the Regulation of the Licentiate in Tourism of UTAD (Diário da República, 2nd series, nº 43, March 3, 2015, pp. 5319-5322) was published in Diário da República and has a positive evaluation by the EVALUATION AGENCY AND ACCREDITATION OF HIGHER EDUCATION (cf. The institutional framework of this course is the School of Human and Social Sciences and the Department of Economics, Sociology and Management (DESG), where the teaching activity works. The course has a fundamental pillar that are the teachers and their high quality teaching and research, doctors in tourism, social sciences and other areas of training essential for the course.
The disciplinary and curricular framework of the course has a very strong focus on tourism as a complex human mobility and activity based on the contributions of the social sciences (sociology, anthropology, economics, geography, history, management, marketing ...), the sciences natural and technological areas. Language learning, the curriculum level - more than 600 protocols with companies and institutions for this purpose - study visits (eg BTL, FITUR, Camino de Santiago de Compostela), the strong link between tourism research and CETRAD (Center for Transdisciplinary Studies for Development, classified as "very good" by the FCT, see, in addition to the Socrates-Erasmus exchanges with other European universities are some of the signs of identity of this leading course in the North from Portugal.
Entities to Practice
Our students develop their profession in municipalities and other public administrations, companies of tourist animation and organization of events, thermal baths, hotels, rural tourism units, wine tourism estates, museums, theme parks, interpretation centers, travel agencies, tour operators , tourist offices, tourist transport companies, tourist research consultants, tour guide companies and heritage interpreters guides, etc.
