Academic Degree
Bachelor (Bologna 1st cycle degree)
General Objectives
The Degree in Basic Education results from the adaptation of the requirements of the existing degrees in Pre-School and Basic Education - 1st Cycle of the Bologna Process (Decree-Law no. 43/2007 of 22 February).
Anyone wishing to become a Pre-School Teacher, or a Teacher of Primary and Lower Secondary Education (Portuguese, History, Mathematics and Natural Sciences), and work with children from 0 to 12 years old, should choose the Degree in Basic Education for their initial training.
At the end of the 1st cycle of Bologna (180 ECTS - 3 academic years), there is the option to take the Degree in Basic Education, choosing the specialist subjects that qualify for professional practice as teachers in pre-school, Primary Education (60 ECTS - 1 academic year) or Lower Secondary Education (90 ECTS - 18 months).
Being a very comprehensive training, it also facilitates a wider range of specialisation options in the 2nd Bologna Cycle (Masters). Graduates in Basic Education can, therefore, in just one more year, be qualified to be a pre-school teacher or primary school teacher and, in another year and a half, be able to be both a Pre-school Teacher and a Primary Education teacher or, even a Lower Secondary Education teacher.
Although it is a course aimed at the training of educators and teachers of primary and lower secondary education, the aim is nevertheless:

- to develop a training profile with employability conditions in formal and non-formal educational contexts, aimed at the development of educational projects and resources;
- to guarantee the conditions for the deepening of the knowledge obtained in the 1st Cycle (First Degree) and required for the the study of teaching in the 2nd Cycle of Education (Master’s Degree).
