Academic Degree
Bachelor (Bologna 1st cycle degree)
General Objectives
1. The Degree in Mechanical Engineering at UTAD is organised as a cycle of studies with a duration of 3 years, and corresponds to 180 ECTS. At the end of this cycle, a Degree in Mechanical Engineering will be awarded, which will allow students:
a) to have recognised equivalence in similar cycles in the European higher education area;
b) to work professionally in the areas covered by the Degree in Mechanical Engineering;
c) allow immediate access to other levels of education in institutions, both in Portugal and abroad.
2. The academic degree in Mechanical Engineering to be awarded by UTAD at the end of a period of six semesters of work must above all demonstrate a solid training in basic sciences and engineering sciences and, in this sense, could allow access to the labour market in positions related to engineering.
3. Throughout the course, students will be able to acquire competences in the different specific areas that are part of the syllabus, as well as a set of complementary transversal skills, in the field of lifelong learning and in the ability to work in a team.
4. It is intended that future graduates in Mechanical Engineering will acquire the following specific competences for the exercise of their profession and citizenship:
a) Ability to conceive, design, execute and maintain machines and their components;
b) Ability to conceive, execute and maintain energy facilities;
c) Use of technical and scientific skills and knowledge to solve a wide range of problems, in an integrated and rational manner;
d) Implementation of strategies of a technological nature that translate into the promotion of sustainable development;
e) Recognise the need for experimentation and be able to design, perform and interpret the results of an experimental programme;
f) Efficiently communicate the content and importance of their work to a wide variety of audiences and through various media;
g) Participate in multidisciplinary teams with a high degree of personal integrity and professional ethics;
h) Know how to apply the acquired knowledge in order to show a professional approach in the area ofMechanical Engineering; competence in research and development, ranging from the research of specialist literature, through the design and development of experiments, and the interpretation and discussion of results, to the use of models and simulation;
i) Development of a set of transversal competences, namely at the level of innovation, management and work in multidisciplinary teams.
