General Objectives
The PhD in Geology aims to provide both Portuguese and foreign doctoral students, with a solid institutional framework of methodological and advanced scientific training in Geology, that enables them to carry out quality scientific work and integrates them into international knowledge networks .
The PhD in Geology has the general objectives of training highly specialised doctoral students, who demonstrate:
a) The ability to systematically understand Geology;
b) Their own competences, aptitudes and research methods in Geology;
c) The ability to conceive, design, adapt and carry out meaningful research respecting the requirements imposed by the standards of academic quality and integrity;
d) That they can carry out a significant opus of original research that contributes to the extension of the frontiers of knowledge in Geology, and which deserves national or international dissemination in publications with a selection committee.
e) An ability to critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise new, complex ideas;
f) An ability to communicate the results of their work with their peers, the rest of the academic community and society in general;
g) An ability, in a knowledge-based society, to promote, in an academic and/or professional context, technological, social and cultural progress

Admission Requirements
- Holders of the master degree or legal equivalent in the areas of Geosciences (Geology, Geography, Natural Sciences) or related;
- Holders of a bachelors degree with a relevant academic or scientific curriculum recognised as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies in the areas of Geosciences (Geology, Geography, Natural Sciences) or related;
- Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognised as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle.
- Holders of a bachelors degree with a relevant academic or scientific curriculum recognised as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies in the areas of Geosciences (Geology, Geography, Natural Sciences) or related;
- Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognised as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle.
