General Objectives
Portugal is essentially a forest country, so, we need professionals who can manage this good.
We welcome students particularly suited to develop and carry out activities directly related to the Nature and the Environmental Sciences.
A degree in Forestry in UTAD is a course of 1st cycle with a duration of three years. The syllabus, carefully designed to meet the current challenges of the Treaty of Bologna, aims to train competent professionals in the area of Forest Sciences at the level of:
Inventory of forests for multiple use,
Biodiversity and conservation of green spaces and wildlife,
Sustainable management of forest resources,
Planning and forest management,
Timber production and technological transformation,
Carbon sequestration and climate change,
Water management,
Monitoring of aquatic ecosystems.

Career Opportunities
- To assist and perform technical functions in the management and preparation of harvesting plans of timber
- To assist in the planning and supervision of construction of access roads and forest roads
- To conduct, supervise and participate in forest resource inventories and wild
- To contribute to innovation in the area of processing of forest products
- To coordinate disposal activities and / or control of pests and diseases
- To develop and maintain computer databases through geographic information systems
- To elaborate Environmental Impact Studies
- To provide forestry education, advice and recommendations to the owners, community organizations and the general public

- To supervise and perform technical functions in forest harvesting operations
- To supervise forest nursery operations
Graduate Profile
Technicians with such training are able to solve problems in your area, know collect, select and interpret specific information of the area, know to substantiate and communicate the proposed solutions, develop skills and motivation for learning throughout life. Should still be able to innovate, investigate and put your practical knowledge and experience in the service of forest in Portugal; Create a strong connection with producers to support and advise effectively at the local level to help meet local needs. Thus, the forest technician should:
- Mastering the forest management, with its implications in terms of management hunting and water resources;
- To interact with forest owners and be able to meet the differentiated and heterogeneous requests as may arise
- Be able to explore the sources of financing that are likely to stimulate private forest
- To formulate strategies for protection and/or restoration / rehabilitation of terrestrial, aquatic and riparian ecosystems
- Know devise measures for prevention and protection against flood
- Be able to survey the forest stocks
- Be a technician who dominate and enjoy thematic in the field of Silvotecnologia and forest industry.
- Must dominate principles of business management and personnel;
- Have generalist profile with basic knowledge of forestry and forest management;
- Must master GIS tools;
- Must master the basics forest protection against fires
- Have craving for research and therefore must master profound concepts of Forestry and experience of design; must master statistical analysis techniques.
- Should be curious and want to know more and more and why.
