Master's Degree
General Objectives
The Master's Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) is a 2nd Cycle Course, with four academic semesters, aiming to equip the students with the specific knowledge required to develop different competences in the general framework of Civil Engineering - Hydraulics, Building, Geotechnics, Structures, Transport Infrastructures and Territory Planning.

Our students are trained to become sound professionals, with a solid and diversified technical and scientific preparation, which is commonly referred to as "conceptual engineers". The following objectives are pursued:

- Practical application of the knowledge received throughout the course, understanding and solving complex civil engineering problems, under less familiar contexts and in broad (scientific, technical, economic, social and environmental) and multidisciplinary contexts.

- Development of solutions or sustained options in situations of limited information, including reflections on the ethical and social implications and responsibilities that might affect or arise from these decisions.

- Succinct and rational communication of both the reasoning and the results of their work, to specialised or general audiences.

- Capacity to learn throughout their professional life, in a fundamentally self-oriented and autonomous way.

The creation of this MSc course (2 years), following the BSc course in Civil Engineering also taught at UTAD (3 years), is justified by two main reasons. First, it is now a consolidated practice, in most EU countries, to require at least 5 scholar years to train a "conceptual engineer". Second, the Portuguese Order of Engineers (OE) also requires a total of 5 years to acknowledge the right for the exercise of the profession as an E2 member. The MSc in Civil Engineering at UTAD is currently on the correspondence table of courses that are sanctioned by this professional association, thus being guaranteed, to the newly trained masters, the access to OE registration, for legal and reasoned professional performance.
