General Objectives
The Degree in Biology is a 1st cycle course lasting 6 semesters and offering 180 ECTS. Throughout the six semesters the student acquires knowledge and competences in Biological Sciences at different levels of organisation, such as systematics, cellular biology and physiology, biochemistry, genetics, ecology, developmental biology, general and molecular biology, etc. The specific aims are: a) To be recognised in similar cycles in European higher education, allowing immediate access to other educational degrees in national and international institutions; b) To develop the capacity to understand the morpho-functional, physical and chemical processes related to biological systems; c) To develop skills for analysing and evaluating biological problems, based on the knowledge acquired in the different areas, in an integrated perspective; d) To provide knowledge for the development of scientific and technical skills in the area; e) To provide a set of transversal competences, including generic and applied skills for Biological Sciences, particularly in the areas of oral and written communication, management and ability to work as a team.

Career Opportunities
Graduates in Biology, given the breadth of their training, may have professional opportunities in all areas of Biology, such as: Structural Biology, Functional Biology, Developmental Biology, Cytology, Histology, Evolution and Biodiversity, Ecology, Use and Conservation of Biological Resources, Biotechnology,
Biological and Biochemical Analysis, where they can:
- Carry out scientific research and development activities in universities, institutes, research centres and public or private laboratories;
- Provide technical and professional services in the biological sciences.
Other areas:
- Work in the area ofscientific journalism, specialist magazines, companies selling scientific material, regulatory bodies and commissions;
- Consultancy in private and state-owned enterprises.
