Radio Universidade Marão began broadcasting at the from a basement in the former University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro ex-DRM premises in Vila Real, on 5 May 1986. From 1 December 1989, it received a licence from Vila Real City Council and set up its studios in Quinta do Espadanal. Since 2004, its studios have been located near the UTAD University Residences, in the new area of the city, next to the City Park and the Vila Real Theatre. It’s an outreach radio station, with the status of a cooperative, broadcasting a lot of music, regional, national and sports news and has already been won the Silver Municipal Merit Medal, awarded by Vila Real City Council in 2005, and the “Communication Douro 2009” Prize, awarded by the Tribuna Douro Magazine. It is open to the academic community, and is a learning tool for students in general, especially for those who intend to pursue a career in media communications.
